In the 1940s, the best music venues in the region didn't let Black audiences through the front door. But that didn't stop Fannie Mae. Instead of fighting the system, she changed it — by buying a building across the street from the hotel that wouldn't serve her. There, above a café, she built the Cotton Club, the most important room in the city, where even white people were welcome. When her world-famous musicians couldn't get a hotel room after a show, she bought a mansion to house them. For nearly thirty years, it was the most alive block in town. Then the city took it by eminent domain and paid her half what it was worth. She left town, but she wasn't a sore loser - she'd already made all the difference. She'd built something worthy of her people, and the city had no choice but to follow.
