For most of human history the ocean floor was darkness — unmapped, unknown, assumed to be flat. Marie Tharp changed that. Working from sonar data at a drafting table she was never allowed to leave for the research ships, she translated columns of numbers into contour lines and found a canyon running the length of the Atlantic.

Her colleague dismissed her findings as "girl talk." Jacques Cousteau was so determined to prove her wrong that he lowered a camera into the Atlantic to settle it. His own footage showed the valley exactly where she said it was. Her maps confirmed plate tectonics and fundamentally changed how humanity understands the planet beneath its feet – a discovery made by hand, at a desk, from data collected by men who wouldn't let her on the boat.
